We all experience fear; some of us more than others. Some of us fear bigger things, while others fear smaller things. But fear in one way or another is very much a constant part of our lives.
The kabbalists teach that there is, in truth, a way to completely remove fear from our lives, and it begins with understanding why it is that we fear in the first place. What is the cause of the fear that we experience? The kabbalists teach something that is essentially very simple: fear – to whatever degree we have it, in any form that it takes - is an indication that there is a disconnection between ourselves and the Creator.
When our soul feels this disconnect from the Light of the Creator, it is manifested as an experience of fear. Which means that a person who - through their spiritual work and study - attains a complete connection to the Light of the Creator never experiences fear.
The Zohar (the most important text of Kabbalah that reveals all the secrets of our world) has many stories of people who, experiencing fear, go to a kabbalist, to a teacher, who shows them the way to completely remove fear from their lives. The Zohar makes this truth clear - that if an individual is completely connected to the Light of the Creator, he or she never has to experience fear.
Once we understand this— that any fear we experience is simply a manifested disconnection from the Light of the Creator- then there are two steps we have to take to begin the process of removing fear from our lives.
First, we look at our actions. We realize that every single time we act in a way of selfishness, of Desire to Receive for the Self Alone, of ego, then that action disconnects us from the Light of the Creator. And therefore, at some point, fear will manifest in our lives from that action. It can be any type or degree of fear.
We have to become clearer and clearer that every action of selfishness, every action of the Desire to Receive for the Self Alone, every action that hurts another person manifests a disconnection from the Light the Creator, and must therefore, at some point, manifest for that person as a feeling of fear.
The second part of the process is to see to what degree we are pushing ourselves to connect to the Light of the Creator. It is one thing to limit the times that we disconnect from the Light of the Creator, but just as important is how much we are pushing ourselves to connect. We know, for instance, that actions of sharing, actions of compassion, and the use of some kabbalistic tools have the simple purpose of awakening a greater connection between the individual—our soul—and the Light of the Creator.
If you’re experiencing fear, this has to be the question you ask: What am I doing to push myself to connect even more strongly with the Light of the Creator? All fear is a message to change and to grow in our connection. If we hear that message and change from it, we can ultimately remove, slowly but surely, any type of fear that we have in our lives.
But again, only if we become very clear and focused, only if we limit more and more the actions that disconnect us from the Light of the Creator and increase more and more the actions that connect us to the Light of the Creator, will we be on a path to be able to completely remove all elements of fear from our lives.
This is one of the promises of the Light and wisdom of Kabbalah. If you pursue this path completely, you are able to fully remove any aspects of fear from your life.
