Often in life, we try to decide whether something should or should not be done; whether something is the right move or the right decision. It is often difficult to know whether our choices and our decisions are coming from the right place, from the deeper part of our soul, or if they are more based on ego, on that shallow part of our selves.
The Kabbalists share a very simple but important understanding that can help us clear the fog that often surrounds our choices. It gives us a way to guide our lives to make sure that our direction and choices are made truly from the innermost part of our soul, the truest part of ourselves.
The Kabbalists teach that if you want to know whether something that you are doing is truly of a perfected state and coming from the right place, from the essence of your soul, then you have to ask the question: Is it important to me that people know of this action, decision, or choice? The more it is important to us that others know about what we are doing, the less true that action is.
Conversely, if we have a desire that nobody ever find out about this action (assuming, of course, it is a positive action), if it is less important to us for people to know about this choice or action, and we are doing it simply because it is right to us, that is an indication that it’s coming from the truest part of our soul.
And so, there is the simple test. The more important to us that our actions are known, the less true they are. The less important to us that our actions are known, the truer they are. This is the case in all areas of life - whether it’s about relationships, acts of sharing, and so forth. If you want to know whether it is coming from the truest part of your soul, ask yourself: Is it something that I don’t want anybody to know about?
Again, if we find ourselves needing people to know about this positive action that we’ve done, or this direction that we are taking, it is an indication that that decision or action is not coming from the truest part of us, but rather from a very great mixture of our ego, of that negative side. But if we are doing an action because we know it’s right and we don’t care if anybody finds out about it, then we know it is coming from the truest part of our selves.
Therefore, if we want to make sure that we are continuously developing and moving towards a life that is filled with decisions and actions that are coming from the truest part of our selves, we have to be developing the desire and clarity to do actions without wanting anybody to know about it. We do it simply because it’s right, simply because it’s what our soul desires to do.
And, as a matter of fact, we want to get to the point where nobody ever finding out about these actions and this goodness that we are revealing makes us the happiest. As we develop this quality, we reveal the truest essence of our soul and make our lives, our decisions, and our direction more and more a manifestation of the truest part of our soul.
