There is a story about Rav Chaim Vital and his teacher, the Ari. During the years they spent together, Rav Vital had a tremendous problem controlling his anger. The Ari told him, “The more you grow and the more connected you become to the Light of the Creator, the more difficult the darkness will become, and the more strongly you will have to fight your anger.”
Every single one of us is in a similar position. The greater the Light, the greater the darkness will often be.
Rav Ashlag, in his book The Wisdom of Truth, makes the point that our soul, our nature, is even greater than we can imagine. It has the ability to force the darkness out. But before that darkness and negativity can be forced out, we have to bring it to the surface. We bring it to the surface by facing it and truly owning it.
One of the ideas that this month teaches us is not to become discouraged by our own darkness. We are not “good” or “bad” people. We are not either Light or darkness; every single one of us always has both aspects. We can act in the most negative ways one day, but that doesn’t mean the Light isn’t still there, or rather, there can be days when we perform genuinely sharing actions, but that doesn’t mean the darkness is no longer there.
The fact that we have tremendous Light at the same time as we have darkness means that we should not be frightened to look within ourselves. Because only by recognizing those aspects of our lives – the actions, thoughts, and words that are of the darkness – only by delving into them, thinking about them, and consistently acknowledging them, can we remove them.
With that in mind, each us this month can look within ourselves and find those areas that are still in darkness. As we find those areas and focus on them, we can use the spiritual tool of the Zohar to cleanse and remove them. Never forget that darkness does not diminish by itself. We have to find the darkness and we have to deal with it. Through the power of this month, we can push our darkness away and reveal tremendous amounts of Light. That is one of the gifts of Adar.
