I have mentioned previously about the section in the Zohar that is tied to a prophecy from Isaiah. There are two very important verses. One we have spoken about, which says, “The veils will be lifted. Your teachers, your guides, will no longer be hidden, your eyes will see your teachers.” It speaks of Rosh Hashanah and what happened - the veils were lifted.
The other verse, which is as exciting, says that when you are walking and question whether you should turn right or left, you will hear a voice from behind you that tells you when you should turn right and when you should turn left. So, what we gained on this Rosh Hashanah is not just, as we say, a lifting of the veils, the ability to see above us, but also, the ability to receive constant guidance from the Light of the Creator. Imagine what your life is going to look like this year if you are able to stop and listen to that voice every time before you have an important decision to make or every time you are confused; we received it on Rosh Hashanah, and it is our job to develop it over this year.
To help us begin the process to develop it, it is not coincidental that the portion of Ha'azinu literally means "listen.” I would like to share with you a beautiful teaching which speaks exactly to this point. It says that the first verse of the portion Ha'azinu means “Speaking to the Heavens, listen to the Heavens.” Moses says, “I listen to the Heavens, and then I will speak.” Moses is teaching us that before we speak, before we are about to do anything, we need to stop and wait for the Supernal Light to come and rest upon us. And every single one of us should live our life this way, from this moment, from this Shabbat on, beginning the process of listening to the Supernal Voice, waiting for the Supernal Light to rest, and then acting. It is a simple tool, but one that can guarantee we will be able to manifest the blessings that we received on Rosh Hashanah.
On Rosh Hashanah, all the veils were lifted. And then this next verse in Isaiah says that whenever you walk and have a choice between right or left, you listen to the voice and the voice will tell you which way to go. How do you develop that throughout this year? Moses teaches us that before we do anything important, we stop and meditate on the Supernal Light resting upon us, then we speak, and then we do. And he says if you merit behaving in this way, then the Light of the Creator will rest upon everything that you do, and every action that you do will be part of the process of bringing closer the Ge'ullah, the Final Redemption.
This is one teaching of the portion Ha’azinu, and it ties in so beautifully and perfectly to the gift we received on Rosh Hashanah. Beginning today, before any important action, before any important words, listen to the Heavens, wait for the Supernal Light to rest upon you, ask for it to rest upon you, then speak, and then do. And if you use this tool, then everything you say and everything you do will be part of the process of bringing us closer to the Final Redemption.
