We are coming to the portion of Metzora, and we know that the overriding idea of this portion is the fact that if a person speaks negatively, especially if he speaks negatively about another person, he creates all kinds of darkness. It used to come out physically as tzaraat, as leprosy, but today it doesn’t come out as that. However, the kabbalists teach us that nevertheless the spiritual damage is still done when a person speaks negatively.
The Zohar says that when a person speaks, sees, or thinks badly of another or himself, his prayers will not enter before the Creator. Why? First of all, it is because we understand that when we are in a place of darkness, our prayers and spiritual work cannot connect us to the Light of the Creator. But, there is also something deeper to it.
There is a section in the Gemara, in Sanhedrin, where they speak about the coming of Mashiach, the End of the Correction, the end of pain, suffering, and death in this world. There are many quotes, one after the other - when will Mashiach come? What has to happen in this world? And one of them is sometimes difficult to understand. It says that the Creator knows in His heart when all the darkness, pain, and death in the world will end, but he has not revealed it yet to his mouth. The heart of the Creator might know, it says, but the mouth doesn't know yet.
What does that mean?
In reference to the moment right before the Splitting of the Sea when Moses went to the Creator and asked what they should do because the Egyptians were closing in behind them, and the Creator answered, “Why are you calling out to Me?” the Bnei Yissaschar says there is a very strange Midrash. The Midrash says yasiyu davar meliban, “They have to send away the words from their heart.”
The Bnei Yissaschar explains that the Creator says in The Talmud, “I have revealed the time of the End of the Correction to my heart. But to my mouth, I have not revealed it.” So he explains, the Shechinah, the female aspect of the Light of the Creator that is with us in all the darkness, pain, and suffering that we are in, is silenced in the realm we are living in, because every time we do a negative action we silence the ability of the Shechinah to assist us, and therefore, we take away its strength to bring the Final Redemption.
And what we have to understand is what it says in the Zohar - “Come and see, the soul that resides within every person, it is Supernally holy. And it has, the soul of every single one of us, has the power to be able to enter and speak before the Creator. And it can enter into any gate;” which means there is no darkness, there is no negativity, there is no sickness, there is no problem that our soul does not have the power to fix, to correct. And there is nothing, there is no force or power in this world that can stop the power of our soul.
But when a person sees or speaks negatively, he literally chokes the life force out of his soul, and then his soul has no power to pray, to create miracles, or to change things. And that’s what we have to understand. Our soul, as it exists now, has the ability to do everything, change anything, create miracles, enter any gate. However, we choke the life out of our soul, and because we do that, it doesn't have any strength, it doesn't have any power, it doesn’t have any ability… and that is what the Geula, the Redemption, is waiting for.
So, with that we can understand. He asks, “What is the Redemption, both personally and for the world? It is when we finally allow our soul to reveal itself.” When we look at the concept of why we are still in exile, why there is still darkness in this world, it is because our heart, which represents our soul, which represents the power to do everything, has not yet been allowed to reveal itself.
Therefore, when we say the heart hasn't told the mouth, it means that our heart - representing our soul, our innate power of our soul - has not been allowed to be revealed and manifest through our mouth, through our actions.
Every time we see, think, or speak the bad, it literally chokes the life force from our soul and then we can do nothing. We can think we are praying, we can think we are teaching, we can think we are assisting, but there is no Light there, there is no power there, there is no strength there.
The heart does not reveal its power to the mouth. It does not manifest its power. That's what we are doing, and that's why there still is the darkness and still is exile. Because we are choking – through our daily negative actions, through our daily negative thoughts, through our daily negative speech - the life force away from our soul.
But in the time of the Redemption, it says all we have to do is allow our heart to manifest its truth, to manifest its Light. Because what's holding us back is not any new Light we have to bring; remember, as the Zohar tells us, our soul as it exists now can go directly in front of the Light of the Creator and can go into every gate. There is nothing that can stop it - any miracle the soul wants to create it can create, any prayer it wants answered it can have answered, any healing it wants to bring down, it has the power… if we don't kill it. And that is all the Creator is waiting for, from the individual and from the world. When you connect heart to mouth, when you connect everything that is in the power of your soul and allow it to be revealed, then even the power of prophecy will be renewed.
Therefore, prophecy, it says, will become commonplace. Why? Because finally, nothing new is going to happen, but rather the true force, power, vision, and wisdom of our soul will be allowed to shine without the daily killing we do now to our soul through our actions. And the truth is that all we have to do is allow, because that Light is already in our heart, is already in our soul.
So, that’s why it says in the Midrash that here the Creator was giving the Israelites the secret of the Final Redemption. When will it happen? When we allow our soul and heart to reveal itself completely, and manifest it through our mouth, through action. The reason there is still exile is because all the greatness is held back in the heart and soul.
The Creator was telling the Israelites, in speaking about the Final Redemption, that all they need to do is allow their heart to reveal its truth to their mouth; then they will have prophecy, wisdom, miracles, and will be able to do everything. That’s what occurred in the Redemption in Egypt, and so will happen in this Redemption, when we finally allow our heart to reveal itself to our mouth, when we allow our soul to reveal its power in this world. And that’s all we have to do. We don’t have to grow. We don't have to do amazing things. We just have to stop choking our soul of its life, and then its innate nature, its innate ability, becomes manifest. And then the heart, the soul, reveals itself completely through the mouth.
